Capital‍‍`s traffic jam heart point identified

The traffic department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) finally identified three areas of the capital as 'heart points' of traffic congestion. These three most congested areas are- Gulshan, Tejgaon, and Ramna traffic division. DMP's traffic department thinks if there is traffic congestion in these areas, its impact spreads to other traffic zones. One additional officer of the rank of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC) has been deployed to decongest these three areas.

It should be noted that currently there are 8 traffic divisions in Dhaka city to ease traffic congestion. The divisions are Ramna, Lalbagh, Motijheel, Wari, Uttara, Gulshan, Mirpur and Tejgaon. One Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC), one Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC), and three Assistant Commissioners of Police (AC) each were serving in these eight divisions. Four Assistant Commissioners of Police (AC) are serving in the Traffic Ramna Division only.

According to DMP traffic department sources, when traffic jams occur in the Gulshan, Tejgaon, and Ramna areas of the capital, it spread to other areas. DMP Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md Munibur Rahman said, Gulshan, Ramna, and Tejgaon, these three divisions can be called the heart point of traffic management in Dhaka city. Earlier one ADC was responsible for 4-8 zones of a department. Now two ADCs will work together to control the traffic system of 4-8 zones per division. We will consider what kind of output comes out after giving additional ADC. If the output is good, it will also be decided to provide one additional ADC in the remaining five sections.

According to the traffic department of DMP, there are a total of 8 zones in the Gulshan traffic department. The 8 zones are Gulshan, Mahakhali, Cantonment, Banani, Badda, Bhatara, Bashundhara and Khilkhet. If a traffic jam occurs in any of these eight areas, it spreads to the surrounding areas. Besides, there is an inter-district bus terminal in Mohakhali. Due to the terminal, there are traffic jams in the surrounding areas including Mahakhali. On the other hand, if there is a traffic jam at Badda or Pragati Sarani, it reaches Shantinagar via Rampura. Diplomatic missions and embassies of various countries are located under the Gulshan Division. As a result, if there is a traffic jam in these areas, the country's image is lost in front of foreigners. Considering these issues, the Gulshan Division is being considered as the heart point of traffic congestion in Dhaka.

DMP Traffic Gulshan Division Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Abdul Momen said that a new ADC was assigned to the Gulshan Traffic Division on the 23rd of last month. The traffic system of the division was then divided into two. One ADC will be on duty in Gulshan North and another ADC in Gulshan South. To the south of Gulshan are Gulshan, Mahakhali, Cantonment, and Banani. To the north of Gulshan are Badda, Vatara, Bashundhara and Khilkhet.

According to DMP traffic department sources, VIP movement in Dhaka is more in the Ramna and Tejgaon sections of DMP traffic. Many times long traffic jams are created in these areas. Besides, vehicles coming from different parts of Dhaka move more through these two sections.

Joynul Abedin, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Ramna Division of DMP Traffic said, after getting an additional ADC, one has been assigned to the Newmarket and Dhanmondi zones, and another has been assigned to Shahbagh and Ramna zones. It was difficult for an ADC to supervise the traffic system of 4 zones at a time. Now there will be one ADC for two zones as there are two ADCs. This will increase surveillance and improve traffic management.

It was known that Tejgaon Traffic Division has been divided into Tejgaon and Mohammadpur. The ADC in charge of Tejgaon will be responsible for traffic management of Tejgaon, Tejgaon Industrial Area and Hatirjheel Zone. On the other hand, the ADC in charge of Mohammadpur will be accountable for the traffic management of the Sherbanglanagar, Mohammadpur, and Adabar zones.
